Guide
On Cast Away, following isn't called following — it's your Crew. Like a film crew, it's the small circle of people you build productions with. Here's how it all works.
Your Crew is the list of users whose casting taste you respect enough to want to see in your feed. Add anyone to your Crew by clicking the small + button next to their stage name anywhere on the site. Remove them by clicking the same spot again — it switches to a checkmark when they're in.
Your Crew appears in the left sidebar, collapsible and sorted by recent activity. You'll see when each of them submits a new slate, votes on something, joins a tournament, or earns a badge. It's how Cast Away stays a living feed rather than just a static library of casts.
Special status for mutual follows
When someone you've added to your Crew adds you to theirs, you two form an Affinity. It's Cast Away's version of a mutual follow — but visible.
Affinities get a small double-circle icon next to the stage name everywhere they appear on the site. In the Crew sidebar, Affinity members appear at the top and get a subtle accent highlight. The Follow button on their profile changes its label from "In your Crew" to Affinity, and its tooltip explains the relationship.
Affinity is intentionally understated — there's no point value, no leaderboard, no badge. It's just a visible signal that the two of you are building a casting relationship together.
Separate from your Crew is Like Minds — a discovery feature that surfaces users whose independent casting overlaps with yours. If you cast Oscar Isaac as Michael Corleone and someone else independently made the same pick, Cast Away notices. When you and another user share enough actor-in-role pairings across different slates, you both get the 🧠 Like Minds badge on the slates involved.
Like Minds is how you find new people to add to your Crew based purely on taste — no follows, no algorithmic guesswork, just "we cast the same people for the same roles." There are three tiers:
🧠 Bronze
5 matches
First recognition tier
🥈 Silver
25 matches
Meaningful taste alignment
🥇 Gold
100 matches
Cast twins across the site
The Crew sidebar in the left nav shows a rolling activity feed of everyone you follow. Each row shows their avatar, stage name, and the most recent thing they did — with a timestamp. Clicking the activity jumps you straight to the slate, pick, or tournament they were involved with.
The activities you'll see include:
Privacy
Your Crew list is private to you — other users can see their own Affinities (because they add you too), but your full follow list isn't visible on your public profile. Your follower count is also hidden to avoid turning the site into a popularity contest. Cast Away rewards taste, not reach.
