Guide

Current, Timeless & Limitless

Every slate on Cast Away lives in exactly one of three modes — Current, Timeless, or Limitless. Legacy is what happens when the rules of Current stop applying to a slate that was already published.

Our posture

Cast Away is a creative tribute to the craft of filmmaking. Every slate honors the actors, directors, cinematographers, editors, sound designers, VFX artists, and entire crews whose work brought the original to life. Slates here are imagination, never criticism — what could be, never what should have been.

🎛

The Mode Toggle

Your lens across the entire site

The Current / Timeless / Limitless / All mode filter isn't just a filter for one page — it's a lens that shapes what you see across Cast Away.

When you select a mode, every page you visit adapts:

  • Film pages — only show slates from the active mode. Top Slates narrows to one column instead of both.
  • Discover — the Popular Slates carousel filters to match your mode.
  • Your feed — feed items tied to the other mode disappear. Social events (follows, badges, tournaments) always show.
  • Actor & director pages — credits and cast history reflect only slates from the active mode.
  • Profiles & libraries — a user's slates filter to show only the mode you're viewing.
  • Tournament — the bracket defaults to the track matching your active mode (the bracket runs Timeless and Current tracks only).

All is the default — it shows everything: Current, Timeless, and Limitless slates together. Think of it as the unfiltered experience.

How it persists

Your choice sticks until you actively change it. Close the tab, come back tomorrow, navigate to any page — the mode you chose stays locked in. It survives refreshes, browser restarts, and every navigation in between.

Current — Cast the next version

Living actors, age-appropriate today

Current mode is the practical fantasy: who would star if a studio greenlit a fresh adaptation today? Two rules:

  1. Every actor must be living. Current mode is about who could step into the role today, on a real set.
  2. Every actor must be age-appropriate for the character today.A 70-year-old can't play a 5-year-old; a 25-year-old can't play an 80-year-old patriarch.

A Current slate is the cast you'd see on a 2026 production slate — practical, present-tense, and deliverable. Current slates explore what a fresh adaptation could look like, with the same respect for the original film's actors, directors, and creative team that any thoughtful new production demands.

Best for

  • • "If they made a new version today, who'd star?"
  • • Franchise next chapters and modern adaptations
  • • Spotting breakout talent before they blow up
  • • Casting conversations rooted in present-day reality

⚠️ Breaking the rules?

If you publish a Current slate that violates the rules — say you cast a 70-year-old as a 5-year-old — the community can vote to recommend it be recategorized as Timeless. When 25 users agree, the slate automatically moves to Timeless, its color scope flips to Deep Burgundy, and a "community" marker appears next to the mode badge.

✦

Timeless — Reimagine the cast

Cast across eras

Timeless mode is the casting playground without limits. Pull from any decade in cinema history — living actors, legendary names from the past, breakout stars in their prime years from any era. Cast a younger actor in an older role, or an older actor in a younger one. Pair Marlon Brando in his 1972 prime with a 2025 newcomer. Imagine Cary Grant and Margot Robbie in the same ensemble. There are no rules about who lived when — only the rule that the cast should cohere as a creative whole.

Timeless slates are reimaginings, not verdicts. They're about asking what else could be possible across the full span of cinema's history, with reverence for the work that made every actor's prime years what they were.

Best for

  • • Reimagining classics across cinema's full timeline
  • • Honoring legendary actors with roles from a different era
  • • Cross-era ensembles that pair generations of talent
  • • Tribute casts that celebrate the craft of the original
✨

Limitless — Cast anyone

No rules at all · Free accounts included

Limitless is the mode with no guardrails. Timeless still asks for screen actors; Current still asks for living, age-appropriate ones. Limitless asks for nothing. Cast a screen actor, a public figure, a fictional character, or the people in your own life. Era, age, availability, whether they've ever acted — none of it applies.

When you cast a role on a Limitless slate you choose between two sources:

  • Famous — one search box across both screen actors and public figures. Musicians, athletes, authors, politicians, cartoon characters: if the world knows who they are, they can hold a role. Every account gets this, free ones included.
  • Personal — your own people. Upload a photo, give a first name and last initial ("Maria G."), and confirm you have the right to use the photo. Your best friend can finally play the lead. An Auteur feature — photos of real people carry obligations we keep with subscribed accounts.

Limitless slates otherwise behave like any other slate: they carry a mode badge, they take Bravos and Boos, and each pick can be voted on individually.

Best for

  • • Dream casts that ignore the industry entirely
  • • Musicians, athletes, and public figures in dramatic roles
  • • Casting your friends and family as the ensemble
  • • Jokes, tributes, and slates made for one group chat

🔒 Photos of real people stay locked down

  • • A Limitless slate that uses a Personal photo defaults to Private — only you can see it, and it's hidden from every feed until you decide otherwise.
  • • If you do publish one, it becomes shareable but unlisted: visible on your profile and to anyone with the link, but kept out of Trending and the rest of algorithmic discovery.
  • • Uploaded photos live in private storage and are served through short-lived signed links — they are never publicly hot-linkable.
  • • Uploads have their location and camera data stripped before storage, and moderators can review them. Only upload photos you have the right to use, with permission from anyone pictured.

Good to know

  • • Every account can cast a Limitless slate with Famous picks — it counts against your active slates like any other. Only Personal photo uploads need Auteur, and buying extra slate slots with Reels doesn't unlock them — it's the subscription that does.
  • • The Tournament runs Current and Timeless tracks, so Limitless slates sit outside the bracket.
  • • Legacy doesn't apply — Limitless has no living-actor rule to break.
🕯

Legacy

When Current becomes Timeless

Legacy is the rarest status on Cast Away and the most bittersweet: it marks a slate that was originally published as Current, but became Timeless when one of its cast members passed away.

When an actor dies, every Current slate that cast them automatically gets the Legacy ribbon and is reclassified to Timeless — because the Current rule (living actors only) is no longer satisfied. The original author keeps credit, the original cast stays intact, and the vote history is preserved.

It's how Cast Away gracefully handles the passage of time without deleting history or demanding edits from users whose favorite slates can't be unpicked.

How you'll see it

Legacy slates carry a ✦ Legacy badge next to the Timeless mode pill. They appear in Timeless sorting, but the badge tells the story of how they got there.

Five active slates (free tier)

On the free Cinephile tier you can have five published slates live at a time — in any mix of modes, including Limitless, and as many takes on the same film as you like. Deleting one frees the slot back up, so the ceiling is never permanent. Upgrading to Auteur removes the cap entirely.
